Our Temple's Rich Heritage & History
Origins
The temple’s central idol, representing Bhagwati in the form of Mahishasuramardini, is believed to have been brought from Tuljapur (Maharashtra) to the village of Haldoné in Goa, sometime around the 12th century. This reflects deep historical ties between regions via pilgrimage, migration, and devotion.Relocations through Time
During periods of religious conflict and colonial pressures (especially under Portuguese rule), the temple underwent several relocations for safety. The first move is recorded in 1567 AD, from Haldoné village to Mayem. Later, around 1669 AD, it was shifted again from Mayem to its present location at Khándola / Khándolé along with Panchayatan Devta ie Shree Daad, Shree Ravalnath, Shree Sidhanath, Shree Laxminarayan.Official Recognition
The temple was formally registered under colonial law (‘Regulamento Majania’) in 1928, becoming a recognized religious institution by the administration. Records of this registration appear in the Portuguese government gazette (“Boletim Oficial”)
